Pulled From the Ground, SF Transbay Pilings

San Francisco Transbay Terminal 1939

San Francisco Transbay Terminal 1939

In 2014 Jackel Enterprises purchased 165 San Francisco Transbay Douglas Fir pilings. The pilings were discovered in 2011 with the excavation of the Transbay Terminal. Over 2000 pilings were found which had been pounded 60+ feet deep in the ground by a steam  powered pile driver.

Our SF Transbay pilings are FSC® Certified 100% Recycled. We have been busy milling the pilings into 4/4 (1″) and 8/4 (2″) thick lumber. Some of the material has been milled to custom specifications.

Much of the material has blue-grey to green-grey coloration on the outer layers due to the absorption of the minerals in the moist soil. The wood was preserved because of the anaerobic conditions of the bay mud, marine sand, colma sand and old bay clay.

We are currently milling Tongue & Groove material for a ceiling treatment that will be installed at our new location. Most of this material is from the jackets left over from milling lumber. We are very excited to see it installed!
